The Best Odyssey Memes of the Week: The Funniest Reactions to Nolan’s Epic

The Odyssey of our daily livesIt's been a month since Nolan's new picture premiered, but memes are still surfacing on the internet here and there. Based on Homer's epic poem from 750-650 BCE, Nolan created a film with a pretty eclectic cast filled with celebrity actors and made some rather questionable costume choices to go with it.Having said all that, in my opinion, the movie is still very enjoyable, and you don't get bored or sleepy in the theater. Not every movie you see has to be perfectly historically accurate; some can be cheesy and fun, and that's ok.It all depends on how you approach the experience; if you go about it to have a good time on a Friday night, you will certainly have it; but if you go expecting to see the deepest interpretation of Homer's ancient text, you will go home pretty disillusioned.The internet has a way of appropriating things from media in general and making them its own, and that's precisely what's happening with these memes.Despite the fact that this movie has been criticized for its casting, for the accent some actors displayed, and for its depiction of Odysseus, one has to watch it, at least to be a part of the conversation; and that's always part of the fun for me, even if you have to watch an objectively bad movie (which it's not the case).I'm starting to think we were much less critical as an audience when we watched films like 2004's Troy or 2000's Gladiator, because we seem to love them regardless of their rather ridiculous costumes and accents.All I'm saying, and this might be my most controversial take, is that we can't ask Cristopher Nolan to be a niche, cult-like, intellectual director when he's mostly a commercial one, with rather exceptional movies made in that format.We might as well watch the movie just to understand the memes about it on Twitter (no, I'm never calling it X) afterward.Was the cast purposefully weird to generate online discussion, in your opinion?
