Others try to justify or explain why and when the characters sing, like it's really a performance for themselves or others. Some Disney movies do that, like High School Musical and Camp Rock. It gives a sense of normalcy while also adding the magic of song. It keeps everything balanced. And yes, some others just start singing randomly out of the blue, or even better, they never actually talk normally; they just sing through the whole thing!
