They each have a full-circle moment when looking back at the first time they show up on screen. They are an excellent example of breaking damaging family patterns and making peace with themselves and their parent's expectations, Hiccup above all the others. He starts as this insecure kid whose father is admired and feared by everyone, and he feels like he will never be good enough because he is vastly different from him. Throughout the film, he discovers his own talents and what makes him special, showing everybody that he doesn't need to be a replica of his father, and there are many different ways of living, some even better than what they were used to. They develop a whole new way of life, so at the end they set free what they love most, knowing that their bond is unbreakable, and that they will reunite when the time is right. It's a beautiful way to explain how life works, making it all the more interesting by adding dragons. We've all felt related to Hiccup at some point, whether it's because of our own family dynamics, our search for our identity, or his unshakeable love for his pet, a type of bond we all understand.
